Estimation of oil production per hectare
The Olive Oil Yield Estimation App per Hectare is a practical and intuitive tool designed to help farmers, technicians, and mills predict the olive yield per unit area. By entering a few basic data points — cultivated area, planting density, average olive production per plant, and oil yield — the app calculates the amount of oil obtainable for both the entire plot and in terms of average production per hectare.
Function and Objectives
The calculation reliably estimates the potential olive oil yield before harvest, providing useful information for milling planning, logistical programming, and the economic assessment of the oil campaign. The app accounts for the oil density, set by default at 0.915 kg/L, but adjustable based on temperature or operational conditions. Results are displayed in a dedicated container and include total olives harvested, amount of oil produced in kilograms and liters, average indicators per hectare, and a brief interpretative note that classifies the yield as low, medium, or high based on the values entered.
Required Parameters
To obtain a complete estimate, it is sufficient to indicate:
- Total area of the olive grove in hectares;
- Number of plants per hectare, based on planting density;
- Average olive production per plant in kilograms;
- Oil yield (%), i.e., the percentage of oil obtainable from the weight of the olives;
- Oil density (kg/L), optional but useful for converting kilograms into liters.
The calculation automatically provides the total weight of olives, the amount of oil produced, and the indicators per hectare, expressed in kilograms and liters.
Additional Tools
The app includes a handy calculator to estimate the number of plants per hectare starting from the spacing. By entering the distance between rows and that within the row, the system calculates the planting density using the formula 10,000 ÷ (row distance × distance in-row). This tool is useful for comparing traditional, intensive, or super-intensive plantations and assessing the productive efficiency of different cultivation configurations.
Interpreting Results
Typical olive oil yields range from 14% to 22%, depending on the cultivar, degree of ripeness, and environmental conditions.
- A low yield may indicate early harvesting or stressed plants.
- A medium yield is typical of balanced years with ripe but not overly advanced fruits.
- A high yield may stem from high-yield cultivars or late harvesting.
The provided data enables comparisons between plots and years, assesses potential profitability, and plans harvesting operations more efficiently.
Practical Applications
The app is useful for estimating production before the oil campaign, defining the expected volumes at the mill, calculating yields per hectare during the design phase of new plantations, and verifying the consistency of production results with historical company data. The results can be easily copied to the clipboard and transferred to field sheets, reports, or production logs.
Cautions
The estimates provided are for informational purposes and depend on numerous factors such as olive variety, soil fertility, agronomic management, irrigation, climate, and extraction plant efficiency. The oil density may vary slightly depending on temperature and composition. The application is designed as an operational support tool for a more conscious and sustainable management of the olive grove, useful for technical planning and enhancing production.
