This application allows you to estimate the distance of lightning based on the time elapsed between seeing the flash and hearing the thunder.

How it works
When you see a flash of lightning, the light arrives almost instantly, while the sound takes longer to travel the distance to the observer.
The app uses the speed of sound in air (343 m/s at 20°C) to estimate the distance in kilometers, meters, and miles: d=v⋅td = v cdot td=v⋅t
where:
- ddd = distance of the lightning;
- vvv = speed of sound (343 m/s);
- ttt = time interval between flash and thunder (s).

- If the thunder arrives 5 seconds after the flash:

→ Distance ≈ 3.4 km. - If the thunder arrives 20 seconds after the flash:
→ Distance ≈ 6.9 km.
Warnings
The calculation provides an approximate estimate:
- The speed of sound depends on temperature, altitude, and humidity;
- Very distant lightning may not be audible;
- It is always advisable to seek shelter as soon as you hear thunder, regardless of the estimated distance.
