NPV Calculator – Economic Evaluation of Investments

The NPV Calculator (Net Present Value) is a useful tool for estimating the economic viability of a project or investment by calculating the present value of future cash flows discounted at a specific rate of return.


How It Works

The user inputs a sequence of cash flows (positive and negative) separated by commas:

  • The first value usually represents the initial investment (negative);
  • The subsequent values are the economic returns over time.

Example:
-10000, 3000, 4000, 5000

By also entering a discount rate in percentage (e.g. 6%), the app automatically calculates the Net Present Value, which is the sum of future cash flows brought back to present value.


Interpreting the Result

The NPV indicates whether an investment creates or destroys value relative to the cost of capital:

  • NPV > 0 → Project is viable and profitable;
  • NPV = 0 → Project breaks even;
  • NPV < 0 → Project is not viable.

Additionally, if a time horizon is specified, the app also provides an estimated equivalent annual rate of return, useful for comparing projects of different durations.

Warnings

The calculation is based on a simplified model that assumes regular time intervals and a constant rate.
For more complex analyses (irregular cash flows, rate variations, or multiple projects), it is advisable to supplement NPV with the calculation of the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) for a complete analysis of economic-financial profiles.
