Nota: per convertire da °C a K, aggiungi 273.15 (es. 25°C = 298.15 K).

Esempi: i = 1 per soluti non elettroliti; i = 2 per NaCl; i = 3 per CaCl₂.

The Osmotic Pressure Calculator (van’t Hoff’s Law) allows you to determine the osmotic pressure of a solution based on its molarity, temperature, and the nature of the solute. Based on van’t Hoff’s law, the app calculates the value of π (osmotic pressure), which represents the pressure needed to prevent the solvent from passing through a semipermeable membrane.

This tool is useful for students, teachers, and researchers studying the chemistry of solutions and the phenomena of osmosis, as well as for applications in biology, medicine, and environmental sciences.

How it works

The user must enter:

  • Molarity (mol/L) – concentration of the solute in the solution;
  • Temperature (K) – absolute temperature in kelvin;
  • Van’t Hoff factor (i) – actual number of particles produced by the solute in solution.

The calculator uses the formula of van’t Hoff’s law:

π = i × M × R × T

where:

  • π is the osmotic pressure (in atm);
  • i is the van’t Hoff factor;
  • M is the molarity of the solute;
  • R is the gas constant (0.0821 L·atm/(mol·K));
  • T is the temperature in kelvin.

Interpreting the results

  • High π → concentrated solution or high temperature;
  • Low π → diluted solution or reduced temperature;
  • The value increases proportionally to the number of particles (factor i), as expected for electrolytes.

Why it is useful

Van’t Hoff’s law is one of the cornerstones of physical chemistry of solutions. Calculating osmotic pressure is useful for:

  • Determining the molar concentration of unknown solutions (osmometry);
  • Analyzing biological solutions and cellular processes related to osmosis;
  • Studying semipermeable membranes and osmotic phenomena in the laboratory;
  • Verifying the behavior of electrolytes and ionic compounds in solution.

The app provides immediate, precise results accompanied by a reference to the theoretical formula, allowing for an intuitive and quantitative understanding of the osmotic phenomenon.

Added tools

The results are shown in a dedicated container, clear and readable, with the option to easily copy the data to the clipboard. The app serves as a useful educational tool for laboratory experiments, academic simulations, and scientific activities involving osmotic pressure.
