Reaction Heat Calculator (Hess’s Law)
The Reaction Heat Calculator (Hess’s Law) allows users to determine the standard enthalpy change (ΔH°) of a chemical reaction based on the standard enthalpies of formation (ΔHf°) of the reactants and products. It is based on Hess’s Law, which states that the overall enthalpy of a reaction is the sum of the enthalpies of the steps that compose it, regardless of the path taken.
The app is designed for students, teachers, and researchers who wish to calculate the heat of reaction simply and accurately, useful for analyzing endothermic or exothermic processes and comparing chemical reactions from an energetic perspective.
How it works
The user inputs the values of the standard enthalpies of formation (ΔHf°) of the reactants and products, expressed in kJ/mol. The calculator automatically applies the formula:
ΔH° = ΣΔHf°(products) – ΣΔHf°(reactants)
The result shows the overall enthalpy change of the reaction:
- ΔH° < 0 → exothermic reaction, releases heat;
- ΔH° > 0 → endothermic reaction, absorbs heat.
Interpreting the results
- A negative ΔH° value indicates a transformation that releases energy to the environment (e.g., combustion, oxidation reactions);
- A positive ΔH° value indicates a transformation that requires energy (e.g., photosynthesis, thermal decompositions);
- The absolute value of ΔH° reflects the amount of energy exchanged during the reaction.
Why it’s useful
Calculating the heat of reaction using Hess’s Law is essential in:
- Thermochemistry – for studying the stability and energy of chemical reactions;
- Chemical engineering – for analyzing energy balances and industrial processes;
- Education and research – for academic exercises and laboratory simulations.
This tool allows for experimental or theoretical verification of Hess’s Law, simplifying calculations and enhancing understanding of the energetic relationships between reactants and products.
Additional features
The app allows users to easily add more reactants and products, adapting to any chemical equation. The results are displayed in a dedicated container, clear and readable, with the possibility of quickly copying the data to the clipboard for reports or lab documentation.
