This application allows you to compare the productivity of the main varieties of tomatoes (for fresh consumption and industrial use), calculating the estimated yield based on the cultivated area.
It is designed for farms, field technicians, and processors who wish to assess the most productive varieties or those suitable for their cultivation system.

How it works

  1. Enter the cultivated area in hectares.
  2. Click on “Compare yields.”
  3. The app displays a comparison table with:
    • average yield (t/ha) per variety;
    • estimated total yield based on the entered area;
    • synthetic agronomic notes.
  4. At the bottom, the variety with the highest estimated yield is automatically indicated.

Included varieties and indicative yields

VarietyAverage yield (t/ha)Characteristics
San Marzano65Traditional for canning, high quality but average yield.
Datterino80High yield, excellent for sweet puree.
Cuore di Bue55Large and prized fruits, lower yield but high market value.
Ciliegino75Good yield, intense flavor, excellent for fresh consumption.
Roma / Round for industry85High yield and uniformity, ideal for industrial processing.

Interpreting the results

  • The yield is calculated as total tons = average yield × area.
  • The values are indicative estimates that may vary based on soil, climate, water management, and fertilization.
  • The variety with the highest yield is not always the most cost-effective: the average market price and the commercial destination (fresh or processed) should also be considered.

Usefulness

  • Support in varietal choice for crop planning or supply chain contracts.
  • Estimation of expected yields before the harvest season.
  • Technical comparison between varieties based on potential profitability per hectare.
  • Useful for agronomic reports, production plans, or budget forecasts.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

1. Are the yield values real or indicative?
They are average reference values derived from agricultural experiences and technical sources. They may vary based on agronomic management and the growing environment.

2. Can I add new varieties?
Yes. You can modify or expand the $yields array in the PHP code by adding new entries, indicating name, average yield, and notes.

3. Does the app consider losses or processing waste?
No. The values refer to field gross yield. To obtain a net transformed yield, you can apply a reduction of 5–10%.

4. Can I change the units of measure?
Yes. You can replace the values in “t/ha” with “kg/plant” or other indicators by modifying the calculation logic.

5. Does the app also work for economic comparisons?
No, this version analyzes only physical yields. It can be integrated with a module for economic simulation (price × yield × cost/ha) to estimate profitability.

6. Is it compatible with smartphones and tablets?
Yes, the interface is responsive and optimized for use on all devices, even in the field.
